One of the best parts of travel is to visit cities and places you’ve only previously read about it history books. Three countries with strong historical backgrounds are Russia, Lithuania and Latvia so they’re popular travel destinations for history buffs.

Travelers on a Russia holiday owe it to themselves to stay in Saint Petersburg. The history of this city, starting with the days of Peter the Great and through World War II, is incredibly rich. In some parts of Saint Petersburg you can still see the devastating effect of Lenin’s Red Terror.

With a history dating back to the year 1009, Lithuania has lots of great destinations for history fans. Vilnius is Lithuania’s largest city by population and has had many moments in its past with both the Russian Federation and the German Occupation of World War II. Vilnius is a great spot for anyone interested in a Lithuania holiday.

Last, but certainly not least, is Latvia. A Latvia holiday for anyone looking for a trip down history should start in the city of Riga, the nation’s capital. Latvia has a great feudal past dating back to the 1200s and you can see plenty of the German influences on the region from that period in time.

An Estonia holiday is a unique vacation idea that is becoming more and more popular. Estonia is a member of a region known as the Baltic States, located in Northern Europe. Estonia has a rich history spanning from the Middle Ages, the Reformation and through the Russian Empire to modern day. It’s a great travel destination for history buffs.

While you’re visiting Estonia or any of the other Baltic States you should consider visiting other countries nearby. With only a short distance separating Estonia from nearby Russia it might be a good idea to go on a Russia holiday as well.

If you’re not afraid to travel a bit farther away from the Baltic region then think about taking a Poland holiday. There are tons of interesting things to do in Poland regardless of the time of year.
